Two Kinds of Voting, Two Kinds of Disruption, and Two Kinds of Unrighteousness

https://medium.com/@BenSasse/two-kinds-of-voting-two-kinds-of-disruption-and-two-kinds-of-unrighteousness-fd26895aa01f#.d9xvfmgzi

Most of our country believes this election is a disaster. Unless something changes, America — the greatest experiment in self-government the world has ever known — is going to spend the next four months shouting that the other party’s nominee is the bigger liar. Tragically, everyone knows that neither frontrunner tells the truth.

My intent tonight is not to throw rocks. It is instead to start a larger conversation about what voting means and about the kind of candidates we want in the future — so that this never happens again.

This letter is actually not primarily about the 2016 US election. But the need to highlight three often overlooked distinctions has been made more urgent by the shallow debate surrounding our troubling presidential choice. We need more wrestling together about: 1) What voting means; 2) How DC should be disrupted; and 3) Why admitting that everyone is broken and fallen does not mean we stop caring about the character of the person in the Oval Office.

  • RIP Blue, 2012-2020---my big, gentle friend.
Clearly Mr. Sasse---who was denounced rather violently and malevolently by at least one poster
here when he published his famous Facebook letter denouncing a certain Republican front runner
while refusing to denounce his supporters---is far more presidential material than either of the nominees
he skewers rightly as dishonest and not (even close to) embodying the best of what's left of this country.

Fake news---news you don't like or don't want to hear.

If we shrug at public dishonesty — if we normalize candidates who think that grabbing power makes it okay to say whatever they need to in the short-term — then we will be changed by it.

Sadly Mr. Sasse skirts a fundamental truth that underlies his whole argument.

Voting is not going to somehow restore us to what he desires, neither will there be fealty to a Constitution a population is either ignorant of, indifferent of or hostile towards.

Religion and morality are the only pillars upon which the Constitution can stand or operate.

Since we have thrown God and the Christian religion out of the culture wholesale - we are become a corrupted and wicked people no longer constrained by the moral guideposts of religion.  Lying and deceitfulness is now seen as a clever virtue and no amount of voting is going to fix that.

We are become a wicked people in a shell of a nation that has already been fundamentally transformed.  Getting back to what the Founders intended and having candidates that share the kinds of moral values Sasse would like to see for our vets and our children, requires what the Christian Church in America has refused to do and had already surrendered: Instilling shame, judgement and insisting on adherence to God's Laws as supreme and sovereign in the culture.

If we will not be governed by God, we will be ruled by the tyrants and tyranny of men who will supplant divine law with the morality of men, whereby lies and deceits are just means to an end and perfectly acceptable.

You cannot have liberty or a Constitution as we once had without morality, virtue and scripture.  The candidates that rise up to pursue power will wax worse and worse as our entire society becomes more wicked, evil, ignorant  and self-absorbed, and is in reality nothing but a reflection of the people we have become.

Trump and The Mao Pantsuit reflect what we are become.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775
