Trump's dwindling VP options depress senators

Several holdouts were looking toward his choice of a No. 2 for reassurance about his campaign.

Donald Trump has said he wants a vice president with Capitol Hill relationships who can help get his agenda through a divided Washington.

But his options in Congress are rapidly dwindling as Trump approaches the Republican convention. On Wednesday, two top contenders — Joni Ernst, the fresh-faced, first-term Iowa senator, and Bob Corker, a top GOP foreign policy hand — crossed their names off Trump’s list or stopped just short of doing so. That leaves Sens. Jeff Sessions, a staunch immigration reform opponent from Alabama and Trump’s closest Hill ally, and long-shot pick Tom Cotton, the youthful and hawkish freshman from Arkansas, as the most prominent names remaining from the congressional pool.

But Republicans being floated for the No. 2 post — particularly those who could run for president themselves in the future — face a tough call. They’re weighing the call of duty to the Republican Party against stepping into the great unknown of being forever associated with Trump.

There's the danger.  Anyone who thinks he has a political future is afraid he/she will destroy that future by being tarred by association with Trump.  Come the second week of November, Trump will be gone and his Veep choice will be gone with him.

The Veep nod will likely go to Newt,  who's 20 years removed from the game and has nothing to lose.

If it's Tom Cotton then every interview he has as VP nominee is going to start out with something like, "Senator Cotton, as leader of the Senate would you support a Democrat blocking a President Trump nominee for almost three years out of simple petulance, as you blocked Cassandra Butts?  If not, why not?"

He also adds nothing.

IMHO its going to be Sessions.

Reasons.

Trump awhile back listed the Job Requirements which included at least 20 years working the DC political scene ability to get things done and loyalty

Sessions meets all of them plus is off the radar now.

It could be Newt but IMHO hes more like Chief of Staff or some other high level position.

A wild card is Cruz. If they struck a deal today, with what happened in Texas during the Primary (48%), Cruz may have been vetted for a Judgeship.  And Power for life to do Constitutional good might appeal to him.
Trump is for America First.
