Donald Trump hit the nail on the head.
"It's almost — in some ways, like, I'm running against two parties," the presumptive GOP presidential nominee said to conservative talk radio host Mike Gallagher in an interview on Thursday.
It may have sounded like he was complaining, but it seems to be more like a deliberate strategy. Since clinching the nomination Trump has made overt appeals to voters who supported socialist Bernie Sanders, while spurning the likes of Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.
Take, for example, what he said at a recent event in New York City.
“The insiders wrote the rules of the game to keep themselves in power and in the money," Trump said "That’s why we’re asking Bernie Sanders’s voters to join our movement, so together we can fix the system for all Americans."
Trump has also described himself and Sanders as being “in complete accord” on trade. His policy positions are in total sync with presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who was pushed to the left by Sanders during their primary.
Trump is openly wooing the Sanders crowd and threatening conservatives like Cruz.
In fact, Trump has openly said he would borrow messaging from Sanders. Trump said earlier this year, "Bernie Sanders has a message that's interesting. I'm going to be taking a lot of the things Bernie said and using them."
Contrast that with what Trump is saying about his former GOP rivals who pledged to support the GOP nominee, but have yet to support him: “In my opinion, they should never be allowed to run for public office again because what they did is disgraceful."
See the difference? Trump is openly wooing the Sanders crowd and threatening conservatives like Cruz.
Trump has never displayed the level of admiration he has for Sanders for any respectable conservatives.
Every socialist position Sanders voters have supported is, apparently, forgivable, but a conservative’s unwillingness to endorse Trump means that person should be barred from public office. Sure, maybe Trump was joking. But, how is that even a funny joke?
Joking or not joking aside, it’s very clear Trump would rather grovel to socialists who might consider supporting him, than bend to conservatives.
So, yes, Trump is running against two parties and it appears he wouldn’t have it any other way.
