Poll: Majority of Republicans Prefer Someone Else to Trump

Just 45 percent of Republican voters say they are satisfied with Donald Trump as their party's presumptive presidential nominee, while 52 percent say they would have preferred someone else, according to results from the latest national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

By comparison, the numbers are reversed for Hillary Clinton among Democrats - 52 percent of Democratic voters are satisfied with Clinton, and 45 percent prefer someone else.

GOP attitudes about Trump break along ideological and educational lines. By a 53 percent-to-45 percent margin, conservative Republicans say they prefer a different nominee to Trump, while moderates are split 49 percent to 49 percent.

Maybe more tellingly, 58 percent of Republicans with a high-school education or less are satisfied with Trump as the party's presumptive nominee, versus 60 percent of Republicans with a college degree who want someone else.

The most recent poll to put Trump ahead of Clinton was a mid-May one from the Washington Post and ABC. In the immediate aftermath of his winning a majority of delegates, he was two points ahead of her. Now he is behind, according to the same pollster, by 12. Trump says that the poll includes too many Democrats. Even if he is right about that, though, the poll finds that he is losing support among Republicans. He has dropped eight points among them, to 77 percent. In the last four presidential elections, the Republican nominee–whether he has ultimately won or lost–has gotten at least 90 percent of Republicans’ votes.

The latest NBC-Wall Street Journal poll shows a smaller decline for Trump: A three-point Clinton lead has become a five-point one. In this poll, too, Trump has disproportionately declined among Republicans: He had 86 percent of them following Indiana but now has 79 percent.

And then there's Texas:

Trump is ahead of Clinton 41 percent to 33 percent in a head-to-head matchup, the poll found. Nineteen percent indicated support for "someone else," and 8 percent said they "haven't thought about it enough to have an opinion."

Trump's advantage over Clinton narrows to 7 percentage points when Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson was added to the choices. He garners 7 percent support, leaving Trump with 39 percent and Clinton with 32 percent.

The last two Republican nominees easily won Texas by double digits — John McCain by 12 in 2008 and Mitt Romney by 16 in 2012.
