The first full orbit takes something like 53 days, they get tighter after that.

I can't do the math but I love watching the orbital mechanics.

I was wrong. Amazing. lol.

Anyway, this satellite will have one of the strangest orbits ever. On purpose. Having it swing so far away on an orbit is to keep radiation as low as possible. Some instruments are hardened, but not all of them.

Me neither. If I could have done the math, I would have been an astronomer.

Btw, I love that NASA Eyes program. Thank you to the person here who told me about it.

If you love orbital mechanics, might I suggest Kerbal Space Program?  Fun game for tech/space nerds. Very involved.

The Juno craft has reached apogee and has begun its 5 million mile fall back toward Jupiter.

Its speed (Relative to Jupiter) fell to just a touch under 1200 mph and is now building again.

Weird mistakes do happen sometimes, rarely, even with all of the levels of quality assurance NASA has.

You mean like the Hubble telescope.   :pondering:

Thank you, for the update.

I've been too depressed lately to check the NASA Eyes program.

The irony is that QA wasn't the problem there.  NASA decided not to do the test that would have caught the error on the ground.  Too expensive.

Faster, Cheaper, Better. pick any two. You can never get all three with government agencies. You rarely get it any more in the private world either.......

Elon Musk's companies being the prime examples.... the number of avoidable mistakes those folks make is shocking.

Yep. A natural consequence of too much youth and way too long working hours. It is well documented on how mistakes really pile up after over 10 hours a day, and over 60 hours a week.

Inbound again.

We'll start getting our first real science after this pass.

Juno craft should be making its close approach within 24 hrs (Just guessing)

Currently 1.61 million miles out travelling at almost 18,000 mph. Picking up speed at a rate of about 2 miles per hour per minute.
