A unidentified man has opened fire in a German cinema complex and may have taken hostages, according to local media.

A masked man with a gun and ammunition belt opened fire in a cinema complex in the small western German town of Viernheim, near Frankfurt, injuring between 20 and 50 people and barricaded himself inside, German media reported on Thursday.

Bild daily and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that elite police were on their way to the scene.

The Darmstaedter Echo said 20 to 50 people had been injured.

Police were not immediately available to comment.

Police in Germany are yet to confirm this.

The updated article says that he may not have had an actual gun at all, and was probably using a stun gun or something similar.  Injuries to hostages are likely due to police using tear gas.

He could not confirm whether the man was carrying a live or a dummy weapon. The tabloid newspaper Bild reported that police had found a hand grenade and an explosives belt next to the man’s body but could not confirm whether they were fake or real.

An armed and masked man was shot dead by German special police on Thursday afternoon after storming a cinema complex in Viernheim in the Hesse region.

The gunman had taken several hostages, all of whom escaped uninjured. A number of people inside the cinema were reportedly lightly injured when police deployed CS gas.

Police said that they had no indication of the motives of the man who entered the Kinopolis complex at about 3pm, shortly after the start of the first screenings of the day.

The cinema had been showing The Jungle Book, Alice in the Wonderland and the comedy Central Intelligence. According to several reports in German media, the man was masked with a balaclava and carrying combat boots and a “long weapon”, with a munition belt slung over his shoulder.

Witnesses said the man fired four shots as he entered the cinema.

Authorities said no hostages were hurt in the incident.

Local media had earlier said that between 20 and 50 people could have been wounded.

The attacker acted alone and appeared to have been a "disturbed man", the interior minister of Hesse state, Peter Beuth, told the regional parliament.

Police had not identified the man or established his motive, spokesman Bernd Hochstaedter said, adding that nothing immediately pointed to him having a militant background.

Cinema employee Guri Blakaj told Reuters the gunman, who appeared to be aged between 18 and 25 and was about 1.7 metres tall, entered the cinema at around 3 pm and told workers to get into an office.

He then went into a cinema theatre. Blakaj, who said there were about six workers and 30 cinemagoers in the building, then heard shots fired.
