The Marine Corps says one of the six men long identified in an iconic World War II photograph showing the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima was actually not in the image.

The Marines announced Thursday that an investigation launched after questions were raised by two amateur historians determined that a previously unknown Marine was in the picture shot by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal during a horrific battle on the tiny island

A panel found that Private First Class Harold Schultz, of Detroit, was in the photo and that Navy Pharmacist's Mate 2nd Class John Bradley wasn't in the image. Bradley had participated in an earlier flag-raising on Mount Suribachi.

The Marines began a review after being contacted by researchers working on a Smithsonian Channel documentary.

Awful for the Bradley family. I read the son's book - he said up to the day he died his father never answered media calls concerning the picture.

Shouldn't matter - Bradley served with distinction in a highly dangerous role.

I wonder why Schultz didn't say anything?

Weren't there actually two flag raisings?

First the real one, then later another staged for a photo?

FYI MORE of our fighters died at Okinawa, than the more publicized Iwo Jima.

That's my understanding.

Being in the photo doesn't matter if you were part of the original flag raising.

For me this is much ado about nothing.  They were all heroes.
Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

True, but proportionately Iwo Jima was bloodier - 6 of every 100 combat troops engaged KIA vs. 5 KIA for every 100 at Okinawa.

But then just about every major battle in the Pacific can be pretty accurately described as hell on earth.
