Mexico: Protesters and police clash, six dead

The recent violent unrest follows months of protests by teachers who reject President Enrique Pena Nieto's landmark education reforms which require educators to undergo performance evaluations before they can be placed in public schools.

Clashes between police and members of a radical teachers' union have left six dead and over 100 people people injured in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

The National Education Workers Coordinator (CNTE) union has been leading demonstrations across the state of Oaxaca against an education reform and the arrest of two of its leaders.

Clashes took place in several municipalities in Oaxaca. The demonstrators, who blocked a federal highway in the southern state of Oaxaca, were reportedly burning vehicles and throwing stones and molotov cocktails at police. Some 15 masked protesters launched fireworks and rocks at police guarding a state education department building, prompting officers to respond with tear gas in the brief exchange.

There is probably more to the story but the union is protesting "teacher evaluations" which is something particular about their society. We would consider such as to be normal.
