Legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully absolutely destroyed socialism with a rant Friday night during the Los Angeles Dodgers game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

“Socialism, failing to work as it always does. This time in Venezuela. You talk about giving everybody something free and all of a sudden, there’s no food to eat. And who do you think is the richest person in Venezuela? The daughter of Hugo Chavez. Hello,” Scully said during the broadcast. (SLIDESHOW: These Barely Clothed Women Love Baseball)

The first part of the quote is missing in most of the articles about this. It therefore leaves the quote without context.

This article from The Washington Times shows a more complete version of the quote and helps put it into context.

"Legendary sports broadcaster Vin Scully ranted against socialism on air Friday after introducing Milwaukee Brewers infielder and Venezuela native Hernan Perez.

"'Perez, 25 years old, originally drafted by the Tigers. Lives in Venezuela,' the Hall-of-Famer said during the Brewers-Dodgers game. 'Boy, can you imagine you're a young kid, you're playing in the United States, you're from Venezuela, and every time you look at the news it's a nightmare.

"'Socialism failing to work, as it always does, this time in Venezuela,' Mr. Scully continued. 'You talk about giving everybody something free and all of a sudden there's no food to eat. And who do you think is the richest person in Venezuela? The daughter of Hugo Chavez. Hello! Anyway, 0-and-2.'"

Vin Scully’s take down of socialism is awesome, but wrong place/time

Quote
... The only question is whether or not Scully should have made his comments during the game. The Right obviously loves what Scully did (and for good reason), but the reaction is completely different when Bob Costs goes off on a tangent about gun violence [in 2012] ...

The Right showed similar disdain to Costas’ comments on the Redskins’ nickname in 2013, by calling it “physically painful,” telling him to “go away,” saying he was turning into Keith Olbermann, and calling him “the patron midget of self-righteousness.” NBC was told to “go back to football” because “most NFL fans just want to be left alone to watch football.”

So if Costas’ comments are not fit for broadcast, why are Scully’s? Is it because Costas came off as didactic, while Scully’s comments were just so natural and conversational? Is it because Scully took down a political system which the Right is trying to fight against, while Costas is criticizing something which is in the Constitution? Or is it because the Right would prefer to hear things they agree with on TV, and just roll their eyes when someone with the opposing opinion decides to speak up ...
