Lawyers in Trump University case seek maximum political pain

Legal fight is escalating over potential release of real estate mogul's deposition videos.

By Josh Gerstein and Maggie Severns

A battle is escalating over the potential release of videos of Donald Trump dodging and weaving during depositions in the Trump University case, footage that could make its way into attack ads aimed at the Republican White House hopeful.

The plaintiffs’ attorneys in two class-action lawsuits are pressuring U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel — the target of Trump’s racially charged attacks — to take steps that could make public four dozen video clips of Trump being pressed on whether his real estate seminar business was a sprawling scam, as well as his thoughts on the 2016 political race.

It’s just one of a series of tactics that the attorneys are using to exploit Trump’s pursuit for the highest office in the United States as they seek to maximize the political pain for Trump — and the strategic gain for their clients.

Trump has denied accusations that Trump University students were ripped off, and he has painted the legal assault as part of a politically motivated campaign to damage his presidential ambitions. He has noted that Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, the major class-action law firm involved, has long ties to presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, paying them $675,000 for speeches in recent years. Attorneys at the firm have also been generous donors to the Clintons' campaigns.

Trump has his ass in a ringer.  Why he didn't settle this case before he ran is confounding. Now, he'll have to pay more and these plaintiff's attorneys are going to make life very uncomfortable for him for the next five months.

The attempt to release the videos proves its a political stunt trial. There is no legit legal reason to publish deposition videos to the public other then for political reasons. You missed that fact.

tRump purposely dragged this case out to punish the plaintiffs.  He wanted to cost them money they most likely could not afford.  This is his typical M O.

I would be opposed to the depositions being released solely for political reasons, regardless of how bad they make Trump look.

There's no reason to attack the judge solely on his ethnic heritage...other than for political reasons.  So there's a lot of that going around.

Attacking him for his anti Americanism which is because hes a Racist.  But you knew that. The Judge is in the wrong here deserves no respect and no American should be defending this Judge no matter how much you hate Trump. Trump did nothing wrong here. The ones calling him a racist need to go join the democrats since they are acting like them using their weapons.  Did you also side with the Democrats when they did the same thing to Palin and Walker?

Trump didn't do that.  He attacked the judge because he felt he was unfair, even though he could give no coherent example as to how he was unfair, and the only reason Trump gave for the judge being unfair was because he was a Mexican.  But you knew that.

How is the judge in the wrong?

By the time they're finished he might not have enough money to finance his own campaign and keep out of the pockets of big donors.

Well, to be fair, the judge is Mexican. He probably wears sombreros and plays maracas, and sneaks out to eat at Taco Bell during his lunch hour. You know the type. Hatred of Trump is encoded in their olive-colored Mexican DNA.

I still find it interesting that this judge in 2014 certified a RICO class action lawsuit against Trump and the very first thing Trump did in 2015 when he decided to run for President was go after Mexicans. Was it all a ploy to get this judge to recuse himself and it snowballed into winning the nomination? What a joke on America that would be.

I think Trumps own lawyer is also supporting Hillary.

I understand the video of Trump testifying is particularly damning.  The judge gets to decide whether it is admissible or not.  Fortunately, the judge is a very good friend of Donald's.

To be really fair, who doesn't sneak out to Taco Bell at lunch?

What are the legal precedents for releasing deposition testimony?  I would love for it to be released if there is precedent for doing so.

But Trump has also been a generous donor to Clinton ... so there's that.
