1 injured in Burlington pipe bomb blast

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

An explosion inside a car sent one person to the hospital.

Burlington Police, fire officials and a Vermont State Police bomb squad spent hours defusing the situation in the parking lot in front of the Home Goods store on Shelburne Road.

A large part of a parking lot was roped off Wednesday while officials took a closer look at the car to see if there were other explosives in it that could pose a threat to bystanders.

Investigators are trying to piece together how big the pipe bomb was. They're pulling fragments of the exploded bomb from the car to try to determine what it looked like. So far, they've been able to determine that it was not big enough to destroy the whole car, but large enough to cause somebody harm.

Burlington Police say three teenagers were turning onto Shelburne Road from Interstate 189 when the bomb went off inside the car. They pulled into the nearby Home Goods parking lot to call for help. Police say a young man riding in the passenger seat was holding the pipe bomb in his lap. When it detonated, police say he seriously hurt his hand. They say his injuries were not life-threatening, but he may have lost a finger. The other two people in the car were OK.

"I don't know why somebody makes a bomb in their home and brings it into a car," Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo said.

"I don't know why somebody makes a bomb in their home and brings it into a car," Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo said.

"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn
