House Speaker Paul Ryan met with Mexico's top diplomat on Tuesday after he denounced Donald Trump's comments about a Hispanic judge as the "textbook definition of racist comments."
The session with Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Claudia Ruiz Massieu came during a closed meeting with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, The Hill reports.
She said that the broader relations between the nations were more critical than what is currently going on politically.
"The relationship between Mexico and the United States is stronger, bigger, more important than a specific moment," Massieu told the Hill.

Earlier Tuesday, Ryan also told reporters that Trump's comments on U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel should be "absolutely disavowed."
Trump later said in a statement that his comments had been "misconstrued."
"I am friends with and employ thousands of people of Mexican and Hispanic descent,"Trump said. But based on the rulings that I have received in the Trump University civil case, I feel justified in questioning whether I am receiving a fair trial."
