Donald Trump repeatedly mocked Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., as “Pocahontas” at a press conference in North Dakota on Thursday, even as a Native American woman present at the event interrupted to call his comments “offensive.”

“That’s very offensive. Sorry,” the woman said.

“Is that offensive? You tell me,” Trump asked.

The woman replied that she was offended, and Trump quickly repeated the phrase.

“Oh, oh really — oh, I’m sorry about that,“ Trump said before turning to a reporter who had asked about Warren, immediately using the term again. “Pocahontas. Is that what you said?”

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has previously used the term to refer to Warren as an allusion to a controversy over her past claims of Native American ancestry. Warren listed herself as a minority when she worked as a faculty member at a pair of Ivy League law schools in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Though she reportedly is 1/32 Cherokee, that would not qualify her to be a member of the tribe. The issue made headlines during Warren’s 2012 election campaign and she defended herself by claiming her “family stories” held that they had Native American roots.

Warren has launched several attacks against Trump in recent weeks. A reporter at the North Dakota press conference began to ask Trump about how Warren “seems to have made it her job” to take him on. Trump cut in as soon as Warren’s name was mentioned.

“Who? Pocahontas?” Trump asked.

All you have to do to get Trump off a plan is to say something about him he doesn't like.  He'll spend the next three weeks attacking you.  A clever person could make good use of that .

From Twitter it seems a lot of liberals don't know that she faked being an Indian to get into Harvard.

These attacks may not be a bad idea if they get that knowledge out there.

Right.  Like all the publicity about it several years ago was effective.  It will be seen as it is right now: an attack on Native Americans and women.

IMHO you are correct. Trump is maneuvering to win the General and knows Hilary's support is mostly lo-info youth. This appears to be an effective education strategy aimed at them using their social media. Sanders did not hit her on her past. So her supporters do not know what shes really like. Art of War...

If correct this also helps explain the coming debate with Sanders. A direct unfiltered medium to educate the youth....

It never got out of the conservative echo chamber. You would be shocked at who doesn't know about it.

Trump IMO should not be calling Warren “Pocahontas”.

Pocahontas (actually born Matoaka, also known as Amonute and later known as Rebecca - the name she chose when she converted to Christianity) was a real life person, not the “Disneyfied” version, but a very real person and quite an interesting historical figure -  the daughter of Powhatan chief Wahunsenacawh, and while Captain John Smith may have embellished the stories of their meeting and with her saving his life, she is credited with if albeit temporarily, bringing peace between the English settlers and the Powhatans.

A true Native Indian, not an “American” Indian per se as she became an English subject when she married Englishman John Rolfe, returned with him to England, bore him a son, became quite the toast of London society and died in England as she and her husband and their son were embarking on a trip back to Virginia.

Trump should IMO be calling Warren by the more accurate “Fauxcahontas” as comparing Warren to Pocahontas is an insult to Pocahontas’s memory and an insult to people with actual indigenous tribal ancestry.

Trump knows what he's doing.  She's a fraud, he's not.  It's just that simple.
