Republican National Committee chief Reince Priebus said Monday the campaign of Donald Trump should aim for "a degree of diversity" in its selection of the presumptive nominee's running mate for the general election.
In an interview on The Hugh Hewitt Show – a portion of which was posted on YouTube – Priebus said the vetting process for the No. 2 slot on the national ballot "is far more detailed… than I think is being reported right now."
Priebus urged Hewitt to ignore reports about who might join Trump as his vice presidential candidate – and "assume the Trump campaign understands that while he is an outsider and represents sort of this shakeup in Washington, which you don’t want to lose because I think that is what people want out there across the country..."
"He also understands that we gotta have a real seasoned veteran" on the ballot, Priebus added.
The RNC chairman added he agreed with Hewitt, who remarked on the Trump's "millennial gap," "that there has to be a degree of diversity on the ballot… whether it be a diversity of age, diversity of gender or ethnic background, somehow or other diversity is important in some respect."
"I do think they're gonna take their time and do it right," he added of the VP pick.
Trump last week said he'd narrowed his choices to "five or six people," all with deep political resumes.
