Here's the thing about corruption: It makes the public very cynical", she said.

Silver will be one of two former leaders of the state Legislature to be sentenced this month.

The judge ordered Silver to pay a fine of $1.75 million and forfeit more than $5 million in ill-gotten gains.

According to reports, Silver must report to prison by July 1.

Prosecutors for U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara requested at least 14 years for a man once considered among the most powerful people in Albany, New York's state capital. He was convicted in November on seven corruption charges.

Moments before Silver was sentenced, his successor in the Assembly, Alice Cancel, who won a special election last month, was being seated for the first time. Former Senate Leader Dean Skelos and his son will be sentenced in the same federal courtroom on May 12, also for convictions on multiple corruption charges.

Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, third from right, struggles through media to get his cab after he was sentenced to 12 years for corruption, Tuesday, May 3, 2016, in NY. Known for his often inscrutable comments and wary, phlegmatic demeanor, Silver gained the nickname "the Sphinx".

He was also accused of steering real estate developers to another law firm in exchange for kickbacks and then throwing his support to rent-control legislation favored by the developers.
