Marshals: Man who fled Georgia prison found after 48 years

ATLANTA — Federal officials say a man who escaped from a Georgia prison work camp nearly 48 years ago has been arrested in Connecticut.

The U.S. Marshals Service says Robert E. Stackowitz was serving a 17-year sentence for robbery in August 1968 when he escaped from the infirmary at Carroll County Prison Work Camp in Carrolton, Georgia.

Officials say a regional task force reviewed the case and found a possible alias for Stackowitz and then found a Connecticut address linked to that name.

Authorities say Stackowitz is being held in a Connecticut jail, waiting to be transported to Georgia. It's not clear if he has an attorney.

Now what we have here is a failure to communicate.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

-Ayn Rand-

If he has a spotless record since 1968 under his new identity let him go.

17 years for robbery?  Hell, murder doesn't even rate that today.

Glad to see the US Marshalls follow the Dudley Do-Right creed.

That's a good point, I think if it was armed robbery, robbery involving violence, some punishment may be appropriate, even if it is parole or something.

But if there were no real victims except that of stealing property, perhaps give him some leniency. Robbery itself of course, is very bad. I guess we have to know more details.

There was another case of this a few years ago. The guy escaped, became a model citizen, married, owned  a business etc.
He said he did it because he did not want his crime record to follow him through life an wanted to start fresh.

The guy in question above was in for armed robbery..no one was hurt..he served enough. That is if he led a spotless life. If he was committing crimes under his new identity throw the book at him.
