Illinois bill looks to strike "illegal alien" from laws

CARBONDALE -- A bill in the Illinois legislature would remove the language "illegal Alien" from Illinois records and from use in courts.

It comes as the debate over immigration continues heating up in this presidential election year.

Immigration attorneys like Charlotte Alvarez of the Bloomington-based Immigration Project, say the term does not accurately describe 99 percent of so-called "undocumented immigrants".

She points out, immigrants don't typically break laws to get here, rather, they skirt administrative rules.

"It's actually not illegal to be in the united states without document or be undocumented and it's not illegal to enter the United States and overstay your visa. It's administratively prohibited," she explained.

The bill comes from Chicago Democrat Silvana Tabares, who points out, a similar measure passed in California.
