How many of that 39% are early voters?  Rubios actually beat Kasich out in places, even though he had dropped out, because ballots had already been cast.  A bell cannot be unrung.

To the thesis of the post:  Trump is blowing it if he's still calling Cruz that.  Now that Cruz is out of the race, it only infuriates people without attracting a single vote.  He needs to stop it yesterday.

I agree with you that historically it's not a large number of early ballots, but that's changing.  States are pushing the voters to start voting by mail (fewer live polling places is one trick, throwing all elections to mail-in is another like either Oregon or Washington state, I forget which).  The number of early and mail-in ballots is growing quickly.  Too quickly for my tastes, because I think it invites cheating.
