Oliver Stone says ‘lawfare’ being used against Trump: ‘New form of warfare’
'Whether you’re for him or against him, [the charges] are minor,' Stone says

Filmmaker Oliver Stone said "lawfare" is being used against former President Trump in the various criminal proceedings he's facing in 2024.

Stone brought up Trump in the context of his new documentary, "Lula," about Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who served prison time in 2018-2019 following a corruption investigation. He sees parallels as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York, connected to a hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

"The charges on both sides of the Trump-Biden election are pretty wild -- that [President] Biden is corrupt and Trump is corrupt," Stone told Variety.

"It’s a new form of warfare. It’s called lawfare," he continued. "And that’s what they’re using against Trump."

Stone noted that Trump, who pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintains his innocence in the landmark New York case, also faces separate cases related to state and federal election interference, as well as misuse of classified documents.

"Whether you’re for him or against him, they are minor," Stone said. "Corruption is a way of life … It goes back to the Greeks, the Romans, and before that the Babylonians, there’s corruption all through history, so let’s not be Pollyannas about it and think we’re ‘America the clean’ and we’re better than anybody else. That’s such bulls--t."

Closing arguments in Trump’s New York criminal trial are expected to begin Tuesday, May 28. Trump has argued the case against him is a scheme by the Department of Justice to prevent him from campaigning.

This makes the second Democrat to candidly admit this in the past few days.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

-Ayn Rand-

Summary?

First the obvious disclaimer. Maher was there to hawk a book, and not give any indication of changing ideological teams.  Quite a price to land him for the show.  GG allowed him an entire block to allow him to discuss.  Still,  this is the biggest high profile guest he's landed.

I think the intent was showing that there is a lot of agreement, if we forego and tone down the rhetoric.  Show did try to focus on agreeing, rather than red meat that Gutfeld throws to the crowd.  Common ground. seemed the theme.

Mahner did go into his Trump insurrectionist rant. He also made a point that it was important to differentiate Liberalism and "Woke".  He seems to think that the two really need to be decoupled.

Over all, minimal friction.   And I for one, have always thought that Maher was 75% reasonable, and a TV political pundit that is a rare rational Liberal.  Disagree with him 95% of the time,  still, he often provides an interesting take to the counter POV.

Both Bragg and James promised to bankrupt Trump and now they have to deliver on that promise.

But it appears this case is collapsing on them. No way would Stone ever vote for Trump. But you can agree that this case is bogus and still not vote for Trump
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Bill Maher is probably closer to a 1980s, maybe mid 90s, liberal Democrat versus what makes up the Democratic Party today.
