Dennis Hastert, once the longest-serving Republican House speaker in U.S. history, was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Chicago to 15 months in prison for paying $1.7 million in hush money to cover up sexual abuse from decades ago. U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin called Hastert a “serial child molester.”

Shortly before learning his sentence, Hastert admitted for the first time that he sexually abused boys decades ago when he was the wrestling coach for Yorkville High School.

Hastert approached the microphone in court and apologized to those he victimized, saying he "mistreated athletes." Durkin then pressed for details, asking directly if Hastert sexually abused the victims.

"Yes," Hastert finally said.

Hastert said he did not recall abusing Scott Cross, who identified himself as alleged victim Individual D in court testimony Wednesday, "but I accept his statement."

I have met some of these people.  I lived within a slingshot toss of Hastert.  I am absolutely stunned at Scott Cross being a victim.  His brother Tom is the real-deal in Republican politics.

I am saddened by this.  Deeply.  But I have no sympathy for Hastert.  None.

I think they need to be limited to 8 years in Congress followed by 2 years in prison for all of them.

John Schmitz (US House-CA) was a highly outspoken right-wing Republican, from my area. He ran for President.

After leaving Congress, he was found to have fathered children out of wedlock, that he refused to support.

Therefore I take the religious right with a grain of salt. Too often they have deviants in their midst.

Got Duggar Family Values?

But at least Schmitz messed around with an adult. Hastert, Schmitz' daughter* and Duggar preyed on children.
