Chicago is a violent hellhole, but for some reason this year it is way more violent and hellish. Stat-nerds from Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight crunched the numbers and according to them the reason for the sharp rise in shootings and murders is because of anti-police Black Lives Matter protests.

Shootings and killings are up in Chicago while arrests are way down. It doesn’t take a genius to see why those two things are connected. It is the reason why arrests are down when crime is up that takes a little understanding.

The severe spike in gun violence Chicago is experiencing can be dated to the release of the video in the Laquan McDonald case, a FiveThirtyEight analysis of crime data shows. The same analysis shows that the city has seen a significant drop in arrests made for homicides and nonfatal shootings, as well as other crimes, since the video’s release on Nov. 24. This suggests a decline in law enforcement activity that may be contributing to the rise in gun crime.

Laquan McDonald was the black teenager high on PCP who was shot for going after a cop with a knife. Following the release of the video of his death, Chicago erupted in anti-police protests, followed by national liberal outrage, a Justice Department investigation, and massive police reform.

All of this attention has had a very negative effect on the Chicago PD:

Chicago police officers have said they are confused by public scrutiny in the wake of the video’s release and have pointed to new and burdensome paperwork as discouraging them from making street stops and engaging in other “proactive policing.” Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi acknowledged that officers might have been more uncertain since the release of the video but suggested that the majority of the change was due to the paperwork requirements…Chicago is on pace for roughly 570 homicides and nearly 2,100 nonfatal shooting incidents, numbers that could be even higher if the violence increases with warmer weather.

This is what is known as “The Ferguson Effect” named after Ferguson, MO where violence erupted after the justified police shooting of black thug Michael Brown. The basic idea is that cops are too afraid to do their job because they don’t want to be accused of racism and brutality. While liberals claim this effect doesn’t exist, it has played out across this country in places like St. Louis and Baltimore. FiverThirtyEight also believes The Ferguson Effect is real:

The spike in gun violence in Chicago since the end of November, though, is too sharp to be explained by seasonal fluctuations or chance. There have been 175 homicides and approximately 675 nonfatal shooting incidents1 from Dec. 1 through March 31, according to our analysis of city data.2 The 69 percent drop in the nonfatal shooting arrest rate and the 48 percent drop in the homicide arrest rate since the video’s release also cannot be explained by temperature or bad luck. Even though crime statistics can see a good amount of variation from year to year and from month to month, this spike in gun violence is statistically significant, and the falling arrest numbers suggest real changes in the process of policing in Chicago since the video’s release.

The FiveThirtyEight crew does a great job of breaking down the numbers, but really this is just commonsense. If the cops stop arresting the bad guys, that means they are out on the street doing bad things. This is something that justice system reformers who want to end “mass incarceration” don’t understand. Crime has been on a steady decline since the 1990’s because cops and prosecutors have done a bang up job of putting criminals away. If you want to stop arresting and jailing criminals, crime will go up. Duh.

The irony here, which I’m sure is lost on the black outrage industry, is that the Black Lives Matter movement is directly responsible for the rise in black deaths. These shootings and killings in Chicago are not committed by white people nor are they happening in white neighborhoods. It is fair to say that Black Lives Matter is literally killing black people in the Windy City.
