 Trump campaign shrinks Lewandowski's role

Despite the billionaire's staunch defense, his embattled campaign manager is losing clout.

In public, Donald Trump is standing behind embattled campaign manager Corey Lewandowski as he faces battery charges for grabbing a reporter. But behind the scenes, Lewandowski's role in the campaign is shrinking.

In early March, Lewandowski ceded authority over many hiring decisions to a lower-ranking staffer. In recent days, the campaign’s press office has been overruling his decisions about issuing credentials for campaign events. Going forward, Trump’s just-named convention manager, Paul Manafort, is expected to take a leading role not just in the selection of delegates, but in the remaining primaries themselves, according to three people on or close to the campaign.

The shift is, in part, a natural outgrowth of the campaign’s maturation. But according to sources close to the campaign, it’s also at least partly the result of long-simmering concerns among some members of Trump’s inner circle about Lewandowski’s lack of national experience, his perceived unwillingness to challenge Trump and his brash temperament.

Those concerns got renewed attention this week, when Lewandowski was charged by police in Jupiter, Fla. with criminal battery related to a March 8 altercation with a reporter then working for the conservative Breitbart News.

“I’m not saying Corey’s going to be fired or anything because I don’t think he’s going to be, at least not at this juncture,” said a person involved in Trump’s campaign. “But Mr. Trump’s listening to other people now. The crew’s expanding. The inner circle is not what it used to be.”

Neither Lewandowski nor the campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, responded to requests for comment.

Lewandowski’s once-outsized grip on the campaign began loosening soon after voting started this winter, when National Political Director Michael Glassner’s title was changed to deputy campaign manager, a change billed as a promotion.

“The move to deputy campaign manager was not something Corey wanted to happen because it put someone in line as a successor in case he had to leave,” said the person involved in Trump’s campaign. “It was an odd move to go from national political director to deputy anything.”

He won't be fired because that would be tantamount to an admission by Trump that he was totally wrong, and that is something Trump simply cannot bring himself to do.  Neither can his supporters; witness the continuing smear campaign against Fields.

The Trump campaign has been telegraphing that it seems.

Lipstick on a pig. All the spokesmorons and Campaign women-punchers in the world won't make Rump a tenable candidate. The fish rots from the head down.

Lewandowski's humble beginnings in the upper Ohio Valley/eastern Ohio:

Anyone Remember Corey?

Wheeling (W.Va.) Intelligencer

A distinctive name currently at the focus of attention in presidential politics might just ring a familiar bell to those in East Ohio.

Corey Lewandowski today is the campaign manager for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, and this week Lewandowski made headlines himself after being charged with misdemeanor battery against a reporter during a rally. He's the guy you often see at Trump's right hand on stage.

But during the late 1990s, he served as campaign manager for former U.S. Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio. Later, he became a member of Ney's staff, working in his downtown St. Clairsville office and representing him at events throughout the district.

You might have seen Corey walking down Main Street in St. Clairsville, standing in line at the bank or eating a Home Pizza. Or you may have spoken with him when needing help with a governmental problem.

At the time, Corey -- a Massachusetts native -- was just out of college at U. Mass, and in his early 20s. He was generally well-liked and well-respected, and seemed to do a pretty good job.

I remember doing a story with him where he told me his family was predominantly Democrat, and that his mother actually worked at the courthouse in Boston. He was inspired to become a Republican by Ronald Reagan, whom he said evoked a strong and secure feeling within him as a child.

I haven't spoken with Corey in many years. But I hope a little of the values from East Ohio remain with him.

Gosh. I seem to recall something happening to good ol' Bob Ney a while back...
