Vanquished two-time presidential candidate and former Texas governor Rick Perry said Sunday that he once thought the Republican race would come down him against Jeb Bush.
Both Bush, a former Florida governor, and Perry have since withdrawn from the race, and now support Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
"I thought it was going to be Jeb Bush and myself, two successful governors laying out their vision for America and bumping their records up for each other," Perry said on Fox News.
"But the electorate wants an outsider, someone who will really shake Washington, D.C. up," Perry said. "I think no one saw this coming."
Perry succeeded Jeb Bush's brother, George W. Bush, as Texas governor in 2000.
The Perry-Bush relationship is complicated. Perry and Jeb Bush governed large Sun Belt states at the same time, but Perry and Bush networks have been rumored to not get along very well. And President George W. Bush is said to loathe Ted Cruz.
Perry's withdrawal from the race boosted Cruz, who was able to consolidate Perry's Texas network.
Perry argued Sunday that Cruz would win at a brokered Republican convention.
"You can expect a contested contest at the convention. At that particular point in time, I think there will be a lot of people comfortable that Ted Cruz, the consistent constitutionalist, the consistent conservative, is the best person for us to put forward to beat Hillary Clinton," Perry said.
