During Thursday night's debate, when Donald Trump was asked by Megyn Kelly who he is listening to as top national security advisers, the first name Trump mentioned was Richard Haass.

Haass has been the president of the Council on Foreign Relations since July 2003, prior to which he was Director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State and a close advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell.

He believes that  maintaining a consistent interventionist or conversely non-interventionist foreign policy would be a mistake and that each situation requires a custom-fit approach.

In May 2013, I reported on a World Affairs Council private reception for Haass, in San Francisco:

Three members of his foreign policy 'dream team' are CFR members and one is a member of the Hudson Institute.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Trump is scrounging, looking for anybody who's willing to stick his neck out to advise Trump.

Haas is more of a television personality than a foreign policy expert, which fits right in with where Trump gets most of is information, "from the shows."
Roy Moore's "spiritual warfare" is driving past a junior high without stopping.

In normal circumstances, I wouldn't even find this as a negative- this is more about the myth that Trump puts around himself versus the reality. The myth is that he is an outsider, anti-establishement, and against things like the CFR. The reality is, he is none of that, and not only so, he will double down on the opposite of those.

Don't like the CFR and think Trump's against it? Well he hires their President and two other members.

Don't like the Washington Insider Establishment and people who make deals with them? Well he promises to make YUGE deals with them and mocks those who don't get along with them (Cruz)...

..and so on...

It is almost like he is mocking the voting public.
