A MAN who had claimed be to an Army general and whose group was allegedly involved in a hostile plan during preparations for the 2015 Papal visit was arrested Tuesday in Bataan by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), a senior police official said Saturday.

The impostor has been identified as Salvador Escobar, alias “Orlando Pablico,” who had been misrepresenting himself as a two-star general in the Philippine Army, Director Victor Deona, CIDG chief, said, quoting reports from the field.

Deona said that Escobar was captured by the joint operatives of CIDG from the National Capital Region and Philippine Army at around 7:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Sacrifice Valley, in the Bataan town of Hermosa.

He added that Escobar and his cohorts are responsible for the extortion, falsification of military documents, illegal recruitment and/or heading a bogus Philippine Army Officer Candidate Course (OCC) Class 11 some time in Nov. 2014 in Metro Manila’s Las Pinas City.

Escobar’s group, composed of fake officers, had posed a serious threat when they were reportedly involved in a hostile plan during the preparations leading up to the visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines on Jan. 15-19, 2015.

A series of search warrants had been issued for Escobar and his cohorts, but they eluded the authorities. ANTHONY VARGAS
