The Tihange nuclear power plant has been evacuated, according to the Belgian broadcaster, VTM.

Employees are reported to have been evacuated from the facility - which despite the situation remains in operation.

The BBC says that security has been increased at all the nuclear power plants in Belgium during the day.

It is now stated that the Tihange nuclear plant, in the town of Huy southeast of Brussels, has been evacuated.

According to the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, citing local police, the workers at the nuclear power plant have left the plant.

Reuters says that people who are critical to the nuclear power plant's operation have remained at the plant.

The nuclear power plant in Tihange is said to be one of two large-scale nuclear facilities in Belgium.

According to the Belgian newspaper HLN, in normal cases about 1000 people work at the facility.

The safety measure to send home most of the employees is about the need to avoid that any of the Muslim employees might have planned an attack.

- Employees are all checked carefully, but it is better to be safe, says Nele Scheerlinck, spokesperson for the Belgian Agency for Nuclear Control, FANC.
