Navy: 8 sailors injured in accident aboard carrier
USA Today Network Navy Times 5:48 p.m. EDT March 18, 2016

Eight sailors were injured Friday aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower after an arresting gear on the flight deck malfunctioned while an airplane was landing.

All of the sailors are in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, Naval Air Force Atlantic said in a Friday news release.

The Navy said the sailors were injured when an arresting gear parted during a routine landing by an E-2C Hawkeye aircraft. The injured sailors were working on the flight deck at the time of the accident.

"The aircraft regained flight and returned safely to its base at Norfolk Naval Station Chambers Field,” the Navy said. No aircrew members were injured.

An investigation into the accident has started.

The Eisenhower is currently conducting its conducting training exercises off the coast of Virginia for an upcoming deployment.

Washington (CNN)Eight sailors on the USS Eisenhower were injured Friday in an accident involving an aircraft landing, the Navy said.

The arresting gear that catches landing airplanes broke on the deck of the ship, which is stationed just off the coast near Norfolk, Virginia, during a routine landing by an E-2C Hawkeye aircraft, the Navy said in a statement. There were no fatalities, and the sailors are listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The names of the sailors, who were working on the flight deck at the time of the accident, will not be released, the Navy said.

The aircraft regained flight and returned safely to its base at Norfolk Naval Station Chambers Field, the Navy said. Initial reports are the aircraft was not damaged and no aircrew members were injured.

Two officials told CNN that the ship temporarily cut email and communications to shore for the entire crew until all family notifications were completed.

The Eisenhower is conducting carrier qualifications for an upcoming deployment.

The Navy is investigating the cause of the accident.
