RUSH: I need you to grab a sound bite here.  If I can find it real quickly.  It's gonna be... Sorry, I should have done this during the break but I was doing something else.  Grab number 15, audio sound bite number 15, last night on the Fox News Channel, Special Report with Bret Baier, speaking with Dr. Krauthammer about Trump's campaign.  And Bret Baier says, "You look at the Democrats and their reaction to Donald Trump. It appears that some of them are getting a little scared about the prospect of facing Trump.  If you look at the turnout rate so far in the Republican primaries, it's exponentially higher."

originalKRAUTHAMMER:  He's demonstrated the ability to bring out people who aren't regular voters, aren't regular Republicans. And he could alter the map.  I think Democrats who thought six months ago that he was a joke -- I thought he was a joke as a nominee for the Republican Party, and a lot of people thought as well, and we were all wrong.  So he has the capacity to appeal.  Democrats are beginning to think that this is not a slam dunk and this guy, he doesn't play by the rules; he makes 'em up. And under a new set of rules, she could lose to him.

RUSH:  So Dr. Charles Krauthammer at the Fox News Channel said last night he was wrong for laughing at Trump, that Democrats are worried, and that Trump is actually bringing a bunch of new people into the Republican Party, and the Democrats are worried.  That is true.  I don't care what others tell you about where the Democrats are, but they'd be silly not to be.  If they're smart politically, they would have to be concerned, which they are.

I said from the beginning that if Trump gets the nomination he will wipe the floor with Hillary Clinton.  I still think that.  In fact, I can easily imagine the end game that will bring conservatives and establishment-types into the fold.  Hard-right conservatives, GOPe and the disaffected working class combined represent a clear plurality of voters in this country.

Fear is a powerful motivator in elections.  It gets people out to vote.  That's why politicians cultivate is so much.

-

Now, usually it's the Dem/Rep politicians trying to gin up fear in their base for votes.  This time, however, the Republican candidate is creating fear for both the Democrats and a good 1/3 of the GOP itself... in the primaries!

Imagine how easy it will be for a presumptive Trump opponent to harness that already existing fear and to stoke it in the general.

Hillary is a weak candidate and Trump's appeal has been under-estimated from the beginning.

Actually, Trump's appeal amongst republican primary voters has been under-estimated.  His appeal to the broader public is either untested, or is turning out to be a lot less than that amongst the first group.

The facts on the ground bear those two statements out.

The fact that Trump has held up so well, under the attacks of both his GOP opponents, and the entire GOP-DC-media opposition and resources.

Assuming he is the candidate, it will be fascinating how he goes forward.

The facts on the ground do not bear that statement out.  The facts on the ground bear out that Trump has done better than expected among a narrow class of people: republican voters that are committed enough to go vote in the primaries.  The facts do not bear out Trump's appeal amongst the broader electorate.
