Republican front-runner Donald Trump scored an easy victory in Illinois' presidential primary on Tuesday as he also picked up wins in Florida and North Carolina to add to his national delegate lead.

With 69 percent of the state's precincts reporting, Trump had 39 percent, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had 30 percent, Ohio Gov. John Kasich had 20 percent and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio had 9 percent.

Trump tops Rubio in Florida, falls to Kasich in Ohio

Donald Trump won a decisive victory in Florida's primary Tuesday night, forcing home-state Sen. Marco Rubio to abandon the race for the Republican presidential nomination. The brash billionaire also picked up North Carolina and Illinois, but faltered in Ohio.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich notched his first and only victory of the primary season by carrying his home state, but he has the fewest delegates of anyone still in the running and had virtually no electoral path to the nomination.

LIVE Super Tuesday Results FULL Fox News Coverage - Donald Trump FULL Victory Speech after winning Illinois, NC & FL on March 15th Super Tuesday

Five US states are holding primary elections for November's presidential poll, in a crucial round that could give Democratic and Republican front-runners a chance to cement their leads.

Polls have opened in Ohio and Florida - both deemed key states - as well as in North Carolina, Illinois and Missouri.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton is hoping to fend off her resurgent challenger, Bernie Sanders.

Meanwhile Donald Trump will aim to edge out his rivals in the Republican race.

The New York real estate mogul is the favourite to win his party's nomination but has run into fierce opposition from within the Republican establishment, as well as facing condemnation from the Democrats.

He scored an early success on Tuesday when he secured all nine delegates in the Northern Mariana Islands, part of the US Pacific Commonwealth, after winning almost 73% of the Republican caucus there.
