A lot depends on the school district one is in. My child's school district does a pretty good job of providing opportunities for advanced/accelerated students. Of course, it isn't a sub-par urban school district, either.
AP classes are usually the first item on the chopping block, whatever the relative quality of the District, rural or urban. When I was in High School, advanced classes were dumped while the District built a new football field. I ended up twiddling my fingers the entire Senior year.
That's a shame. My child has been the beneficiary of quite a few AP courses at school, and is in senior year.
I got in one of two offered--in a private school, and ended up with credit for a year of College English. There were no AP classes offered in the public schools.
What are these AP classes you speak of? Nothing like that when I was in school. I was lucky to get a year of linear algebra my senior year. No calculus. Also got some Chemistry II until I got kicked out of for endangering the school.
That'll teach you drop the sodium into the sink!
@Kamaji SIC 'EM! Bite down until you break bones!
I took the GED when I was a Junor in high school and escaped a year and half early...
