Breitbart Is But A Microcosm Of The Right’s Civil War

MATT K. LEWIS

9:43 AM 03/14/2016

First they came for the RINOs.

… Then they got around to the free market conservatives.

In case you’ve missed it, the dumpster fire taking place at Breitbart is heating up. What is more, it’s a microcosm of what is happening on the Right.

First, like Breitbart (whose founder, Andrew Breitbart, died in 2012), the conservative movement lacks a de facto leader—and problems arise when there are no adults in charge (consider how both Pat Buchanan and Bill Kristol once both fit under the umbrella of Ronald Reagan’s conservative movement).

Absent that uniting figure, the center cannot hold.

But the real comparison is with the schism—not between RINOs and conservatives—but between Right-Wing nationalists who support Trump and a group of non-Kool-Aid drinkers who, until recently, might have been labeled hard-core conservatives.

This is an example of how a revolution devours its own. “Trumpbart” has now declared the following people and organizations apostates: Ben Shapiro, Michelle Fields, Fox News, and Ted Cruz.

As I’ve been saying for a long time now, this is not as simple as truuuu conservatives versus the “establishment.” This is no longer Right vs. Left or even right vs. wrong—it’s us versus them.

To be honest, this story is interesting to me for a few reasons. First, I know almost all of the main players in this drama. Second, this is a good test case for why center-right journalism should preserve its intellectual honesty and not become a house organ for any political candidate. (I’m happy that the Daily Caller encourages all sides of this debate to express their views.) Like Trump’s politics, Breitbart’s editorial model appears to about forced conformity and protectionism—not the free market, where the best ideas emerge and win.

But that’s not the real story. The real story is how the civil war taking place at Breitbart shows that this website is basically the conservative movement writ large.

It would be one thing to criticize squishy, moderate Republicans for betrayal. But we’re long past that point. We are now at the point where any skepticism of Donald Trump is a bridge too far. When Ben Shapiro isn’t hard core enough for you, you’re the one with the problem.

And so, we’ve arrived at this point. Dissent will not be tolerated.

Even Robespierre went to the scaffold.

Ben Shapiro and Michelle Fields have both quit over at Trumpbart this morning.  So, half the writers have left, an editor has left, and a PR person has resigned.

And

Ben Shapiro ‏@benshapiro  1h1 hour ago

There are many good people still contractually bound to Breitbart. Do not assume that just because people are there, they want to be.

In the scope of current events, Breitbart is but a pimple on the global Blog's arse.

Breitbart no longer deserves to carry the name of its founder.  Shilling for one candidate to the point of creating a hostile work environment should mean the end of this shameful website.

Breitbart brings shame on the name of its founder.   Shilling for Trump debases the entire site.

You mean offering smear merchants a chance to resign instead of being fired is now a "Civil War"?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzRyxmL2aTY

Video of the alleged incident surfaced. Quite different then what the smear merchants here, the Wash Post, Fox News, Talk Radio etc "reported"

BTW, that guy in the blue suit is a security guard or Sec Service agent, not the Trump Campaign manager as erroneously reported by EVERYONE in the smear machine

Add Drudge and Gateway Pundit to the heavy handed cheer leading of a single candidate as well.

We'll let the cops sort it out.

Meanwhile, Trumpbart is bleeding employees and likely won't be able to attract anybody who wants to do objective reporting.  So, its days are likely numbered.

See Breitbart’s Sarcastic, Promptly Deleted Response to Ben Shapiro’s Resignation (UPDATED)

by J.D. Durkin | 9:21 am, March 14th, 2016 176

Screen Shot 2016-03-14 at 9.08.12 AMOops.

In the early morning hours on Monday, Breitbart published a scathing takedown of their now-former editor-at-large Ben Shapiro after he announced his resignation from the conservative media company this weekend. The piece with the headline “BEN SHAPIRO BETRAYS LOYAL BREITBART READERS IN PURSUIT OF FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTORSHIP” has since been deleted; but of course, nothing on the internet ever really gets deleted, so you can read the sarcastic company reply here for yourself.

The lede reads, “Former Breitbart News editor-at-large Ben Shapiro announced Sunday evening via left-wing Buzzfeed that he is abandoning Andrew Breitbart’s lifelong best friend, widow, hand-picked management team and friends in pursuit of an elusive contributorship at the Fox News Channel.” First shot, fired.

The piece, written by William Bigelow, sarcastically continued, “It was business as usual for the ambitious conservative gadfly, who is known to live on the edge, courting and then leaving a series of companies over the past several years.”

Breitbart then lobbed a few potshots at Buzzfeed directly, bitingly writing:

“Buzzfeed, a site that has been aiming to destroy Breitbart News since the moment Andrew Breitbart died, and which has predicted the demise of Breitbart.com for the past four years, rewarded Shapiro for his bravery by placing news of his resignation just beneath several other hot stories, including “This Wee Little Snake Taking Its First Breath Will Cure Anyone’s Fears,” and “2/26: How Two Llamas And A Dress Gave Us The Internet’s Greatest Day.”

The now-deleted post continued:

Breitbart California editor Joel B. Pollak, Shapiro’s friend and fellow Orthodox Jew, expressed concern for his former colleague.

“I’m worried. I had enjoyed listening to Ben read Breitbart California stories, word for word, without attribution, on his morning radio show. Now what will he do for content?”

Breitbart News senior management issued a short statement: “Ben’s listicles will be missed.”

The mood was somber at Breitbart News’ Los Angeles office, where one staffer stared silently at promotional copies of Shapiro’s books, left behind on the shelves when the author stopped showing up for work, several years ago.

You can read the full original response from Breitbart here, archived through a webpage capture service. The following message is what pops up when you visit the URL for the original story, however:  404, page not found.

If that evidence is so good, why is Jim Hoft the only one pedaling it? No Drudge. No Trumpbart.

Doesn't that read like Trump wrote it himself? Full of unfounded innuendo, threats of legal action, threats of personal destruction.

Matt Boyle is a genuine POS. Shapiro was Andrew Breitbarts close friend and he would never approve of going into the tank on a single candidate. I predict Trumpbart will be dead in a year because it lost all credibility.

If I remember correctly, after Breitbart died, the friend who took over for him was/is a committed leftist who promised to maintain the integrity of the site.  Yeah, I know, cognitive dissonance, right?

They did not get fired.  This is a huge black eye to Trumpbart, which is why they tried to smear Shapiro as he was quitting.

Nolte will have to resort to hiring from VDARE to keep the doors open.  Maybe Coulter could sign on if she can sober up before noon.
