What’s interesting about this whole debacle is the Trump campaign’s response to it.

The statement was issued in the wee hours of Wednesday morning but remains Breitbart’s official comment on the matter, hours after sources said Lewandowski acknowledged to Breitbart’s Washington political editor, Matthew Boyle, that he did manhandle Fields.

Lewandowski’s explanation to Boyle, said these sources, was that he and Fields had never met before and that he didn’t recognize her as a Breitbart reporter, instead mistaking her for an adversarial member of the mainstream media. Trump’s press secretary, Hope Hicks, didn’t respond to an email seeking comment. Nor did the usually responsive Boyle.

Miami, Fla. - Speaking to reporters in the spin room after the CNN GOP primary debate, candidate Donald Trump denied campaign manager Corey Lewandowski roughed up or assaulted Breitbart political reporter Michelle Fields at a campaign event earlier this week.

"I don't think it ever happened because he was surrounded by Secret Service agents, many of them who were with me and I didn't see anything happen," Trump said.

When asked if Trump had seen the bruises left on Field's arm, he suggested they didn't get there because Lewandowski grabbed her and then suggested the media "check her out."

Earlier today Washington Post reporter Ben Terris, who witnessed the incident, published a lengthy piece detailing what happened.

As security parted the masses to give him passage out of the chandelier-lit ballroom, Michelle Fields, a young reporter for Trump-friendly Breitbart News, pressed forward to ask the Republican front-runner a question. I watched as a man with short-cropped hair and a suit grabbed her arm and yanked her out of the way. He was Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s 41-year-old campaign manager.

Fields stumbled. Finger-shaped bruises formed on her arm.

“I’m just a little spooked,” she said, a tear streaming down her face. “No one has grabbed me like that before.”

According to the Daily Beast, Lewandowski told Breitbart reporter Matt Boyle yesterday he did in fact manhandle Fields because he thought she was part of a hostile press. This morning, Lewandowski and the Trump campaign denied the incident ever occurred and Lewandowski took to Twitter to further attack Fields.

A Breitbart reporter is filing a criminal complaint against Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski alleging that he grabbed her at a press conference this week, The Hill has learned.
 
The Jupiter Police Department confirmed in a statement shared with The Hill that it was investigating an alleged battery from Tuesday night at Trump National. The police report was filed Friday morning.
 
Breitbart's president and CEO earlier Friday rejected the Trump campaign's claim that Fields may have made up the story.

"Breitbart News stands behind Michelle Fields," Larry Solov said in a statement, adding that "Trump's suggestion that Fields made up the incident Tuesday evening contradicts the evidence."
Washington Post reporter Ben Terris wrote Thursday that he witnessed Fields being grabbed, identifying Lewandowski as the person who did it.
 
Fields on Thursday displayed bruising on her arm on social media and in an interview with ABC News. Fields and Terris can be heard in audio from the scrum Tuesday night immediately after the incident.
 
Breitbart on Friday published a piece suggesting that Lewandowski had been misidentified.
 
Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson insisted during an interview on Fox Business Network on Thursday that Lewandowski didn't forcefully grab Fields's arm but suggested that "someone probably did grab her."
 
Breitbart issued statements Thursday defending the reporter as Trump's campaign denied that the altercation took place, with Lewandowski personally firing off tweets including accusing Fields of being an "attention seeker."
 
Trump himself addressed the controversy on Thursday night after the GOP debate, telling CNN's Dylan Byers that there was no evidence to support the claim by Fields, saying that "perhaps she made the story up. I think that's what happened."
 
Fields told ABC she wanted Trump to imagine how she might be treated if she was his daughter.
 
Lewandowski tweeted directly at Fields late Thursday, calling her "totally delusional" and saying he had never met her.
