Sanders: Whites don't know what it's like to be poor

Bernie Sanders, the senator representing the socialist paradise of Vermont, has apparently never seen a poor white person.  This is understandable, since about 1% of the state's population is black.

But Sanders considers himself an expert on the racial divide in poverty.  And at last night's debate with Hillary Clinton, the senator expounded on his theories of race and poverty.

Daily Caller:

    During the CNN Democratic debate Thursday night Sen. Bernie Sanders claimed that if someone was white they don’t know what it’s like to be poor or live in a ghetto.

    “When you’re white you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto, you don’t know what it’s like to be poor,” said Sanders. “You don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you walk down the street, or dragged out of a car.”

    The remarks came in response from a question by CNN’s Don Lemon that asked candidates what “racial blind spots” they had.

    Clinton responded by saying, “being a white person in the United States of America I know that I’ve never had the experience that so many people in this audience have had.” Hillary went on to say, “I have spent a lot of time with the mother’s of African-American children who have lost them — Trayvon Martin’s mother.”

This is my grandmother, all her brothers and sisters and her parents during the Great Depression in Alabama. Her and Grandpa were poor all their life. My parents grew up poor, and my sister and I certainly didn't grow up rich.

I beg to differ.

This wasn't just one or two families either, and there were many worse off than them. There are still people like this in Appalachia and the Foothills.

This is why it really frosts me when the liberals spout this stuff.

And, wasn't Bernie on food stamps for much of his younger life?  Is he saying he wasn't really poor, just defrauding the system?

Sanders  must know Appalachia is a whole region of the country that’s almost all white and dirt poor.

But of course he does, Sanders is just playing the white guilt card to try and win votes from Hillary Clinton’s base of voters.

You can see elements of it even up here.

That's the difference between poor whites and people of color: you see a lot more of them in the middle of nowhere, where the perks of city living (and much of big government) are too far away to be of use. That's also part of the explanation of why black incarceration is so much higher: there's more of them in one place, making police work more efficient and crime easier to catch.

Back then growing up "poor" for some folks meant being on the threshold of not having enough to eat.

Today growing up "poor" means the govt. makes sure you ain't hungry, with foodstamps and free meals in schools.

I dare say back then there was a meaningful incentive to get your act together, or else suffer greatly.

Today there is barely enough incentive.

I wonder what Bernt Weenie Sandwich thought if and when he ever heard Will Rogers's
wisecrack (on a 1932 radio program, The Gulf Headliners) about the United States
being the only nation in the history of the world that ever went to the poorhouse in an
automobile. Sandwich would have denounced Rogers as just another privileged white
guy and missed the thought of helping a country laugh its way through a depression.

Of course today you could say we were the only nation in the history of the world
bent on going to the poorhouse on a computer . . .

The thing is, neither do most American blacks, or any other ethnicity in America.  If one goes to places like Calcutta or Zimbabwe, or any number of hellholes, then one will see actual poverty, and realize that most Americans, including most American blacks, live in relative splendor.

Not that this is something that Bernie would care about, but in the Bible the references to "poor" are frequently meant as the poor in spirit.  They weren't generally as concerned as poor as in lacking in material goods.

A church group from my area recently went to Liberia and reported on the extreme poverty and want they saw there. I doubt the average American, white or black, has a clue what true poverty is like. Bernie Sanders sure as heck doesn't.
