New curriculum rules means teaching pupils about foreign civilisations is mandatory, but key events from British history are not.
Even Winston Churchill and the Second World War aren’t deemed essential anymore.
The Campaign For Real Education has hit out at the controversial curriculum being brought into our schools.
Chairman of the group Chris McGovern said: “No landmark even in British history has to be taught.“Magna Carta, the two world wars and Winston Churchill, for example, are included in the curriculum as non-statutory examples of what teachers ‘could’ include.“Previously teaching of the world wars was compulsory.
“Trafalgar, Waterloo, Nelson and Wellington are ignored. There is no requirement to teach about any specific British monarch, prime minister, act of parliament, battle or individual.
“In contrast, certain topics are placed on prescribed lists, for example either early Islamic or Mayan civilisation or Benin must be taught.”
Ukip’s Deputy Leader Paul Nuttall said: “It is sheer madness for children to not learn about their own heritage and history.
“The fact that even living history such as the Second World War is being ignored goes some of the way to explaining why the bulldog spirit is missing from a large section of Britain’s youth.“We do need to know about wider historical events and cultures – but this just cannot come at the expense of our own.“A lack of national identity has already seen so many of youngsters becoming radicalised and this just exacerbates that.
“Great Britain is just that – great – and without teaching our young people about how we became great, we won’t be able to continue being a world leader.”
