Virginia police officer killed a day after she is sworn in; 2 others injured

A Virginia police officer was killed while responding to a domestic-related shooting a day after she was sworn in, authorities said.

Prince William County police officer Ashley Guindon was killed Saturday night in Lake Ridge. She was sworn in Friday.

Two other officers were injured in the shooting, authorities said. One was in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds and another officer was stable, according to Corey Stewart, chairman of the board of county supervisors.

A day before the shooting, the department tweeted a photo of Guindon after her swearing in.

Guindon had been an officer before but took some time off, Stewart said.

Authorities did not release additional details on the domestic call. But when police arrived at the scene, they found a civilian woman killed in that incident, Stewart said.

Before Saturday, the department has had three officers killed in the line of duty since 1970, it said on its website.

Prince William County is about 25 miles south of Washington, D.C.

Pentagon says employee is suspect in killing of rookie officer Ashley Guindon
AP via FOX 5
Quote
WOODBRIDGE, Va. (AP) — An Army staff sergeant assigned to the Pentagon was arrested on murder and other charges in the death of a police officer and another person, authorities said Sunday.

Ronald Hamilton, 32, is being held without bond in the Prince William County Adult Detention Center on charges that include murder of a law enforcement officer. He is accused of shooting and killing Officer Ashley Guindon after she answered a domestic violence call. Two other officers were hospitalized with injuries.

The shooting occurred at Hamilton's home in Woodbridge, where neighbors say he lived with his wife and their 10-year-old son.

Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert tells The Associated Press that the gunman's wife was other person killed. He didn't provide her name.

The suspect is an active duty Army staff sergeant assigned to the Joint Staff Support Center at the Pentagon, according to Cindy Your, a Defense Information Systems Agency spokeswoman based at Fort Meade, Maryland.

The death of Ashley Guindon was just the latest tragedy to strike the family. Her father, David, committed suicide upon returning from Iraq, where he served with the New Hampshire Air National Guard.

"He came home and took his own life," said Dorothy Guindon, Ashley's grandmother.

She said Ashley was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. The family later moved to Merrimack, New Hampshire.

"This is really a shock to us," Dorothy Guindon said. "Ashley was such a nice person." ...

Ashley Guindon was sworn in as an officer on Friday.

"The Prince William County Police Department is in deep mourning," Hudson said. "This is a sad day for everybody in this room, a sad day for law enforcement."

Ronald Williams Hamilton, 32, is accused of shooting the three police officers as they approached the front door of his house about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Hudson said. He surrendered to backup officers who arrived after the three officers were shot, Hudson said.

Hamilton's wife, Crystal Hamilton, 29, was found dead inside the house, Hudson said.

"The investigation revealed that the accused and his wife were involved in a verbal altercation which escalated physically," he said. "The wife was able to contact police; however, before officers could arrive, she was allegedly shot and killed by the accused."

The couple's 11-year-old son fled the residence before the shooting, the chief said. Family and friends are caring for the boy, he said.

Two guns, a .45-caliber pistol and a rifle, were found in the house, Hudson said.

Ronald Williams Hamilton faces two murder charges.

Hamilton is an active duty Army staff sergeant assigned to the Joint Staff Support Center at the Pentagon, said Cindy Your of the Defense Information Systems Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland.

Hamilton is charged with one count of capital murder of a police officer, one count of first-degree murder, two counts of malicious wounding of a police officer and two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

He is being held without bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Commonwealth Attorney Paul Ebert said he "likely" to seek the death penalty but hasn't made a decision yet.

Wounded were Officer Jesse Hempen, 31, who had been with the department for more than eight years, and Officer David McKeown, 33, a 10-year veteran. They were taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital and "We're led to believe their recovery will be full," Hudson said.

A day before the shooting, the department tweeted a photo of Guindon after her swearing-in.

Hudson said Guindon interned with the Prince William County Police Department while she attended graduate school. She officially joined the police force in 2015 and finished training in June, but she took some time off for "personal reasons."

She decided to come back and was sworn in to the department on Friday.

"We were struck by her passion to do this job," the chief said. "She couldn't get it out of her blood. She clearly had a passion to serve others that went beyond herself."

Before Saturday, the department has had three officers killed in the line of duty since 1970, it said on its website.

ABC’s GMA Devotes Only 22-Second News Brief to Shooting Death of Rookie Virginia Police Officer
By Curtis Houck | February 28, 2016 | 5:01 PM EST

On Sunday morning, ABC’s Good Morning America chose to devote only a tease and scant 22-second news brief on the tragic shooting death of a rookie police officer in a Washington D.C. suburb and instead devote over half the hour-long newscast to previewing the Oscars later that day on ABC.

When the opening credits ran, one of the stories previewed was the death of Prince William County, VA police officer Ashley Guindon and, typically, that means that the program will devote a full story and/or make it a main focus of the entire show. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Fill-in host Sarah Haines provided the tease following one on the latest 2016 news, but the shooting death of an officer who had been sworn in only a day beforehand then fetched a pathetic 22 seconds from weekend newsreader Ron Claiborne:

We begin with news of a rookie police officer in Virginia who was shot and killed just one day after being sworn in. Officer Ashley Guindon responded in Woodbridge, Virginia, that’s south of Washington, D.C., responded to a call about an altercation at a home when shots rang out. This was on Saturday. Fatally wounded Guindon and wounded two others. Police say a suspect has been arrested.

In contrast, NBC’s Today gave far more time to this latest act of violence against law enforcement to the tune of a one-minute-and-55-second segment from weekend newsreader Sheinelle Jones.

Fill-in co-host Jeff Rossen turned to Jones and noted that they had “ome tragic news to report overnight” as “three officers shot, one of them killed, while they were pursuing a suspect in Virginia.”

Jones explained how Guindon was sworn in the day before and the original dispatch came at 5:30 p.m. for a domestic-related shooting that would tragically result in her death and two fellow officers sustaining injuries.

Also unlike ABC, Jones played clips from local NBC affiliate WRC of neighbors and a Prince William County Police Department official plus alluded to Guindon’s previous service to our country as a U.S. Marine and “family members in law enforcement.”

While Good Morning America and Today air on Sundays, CBS This Morning does not and the news magazine program CBS News Sunday Morning airs. Prior to the slew of long profiles that makeup the show, Sunday Morning does include a short news round-up near the top and one such brief from interim host Jane Pauley did allude to Guindon’s passing.

As my colleague Mike Ciandella wrote on January 13, the subject of alleged police shootings of suspects totaled over 13 hours on the network evening newscasts of the course of 2015 versus “just 109 minutes — less than one-seventh the airtime — to cases where police officers died in the line of duty.”

The transcript of the tease and brief from ABC’s Good Morning America on February 28 can be found below.

Since the cop was white, I'm surprised they gave it that much coverage or any coverage at all.

Never forget that ABC is in the entertainment business first and foremost, and they broadcast the Oscars last night.  News programs are just part of the delivery vehicle for their paid programming.

That said, I am deeply saddened by the loss of Officer Guindon, who grew up and went to high school in the very community (Merrimack, NH) in which I now sit writing these words.   :0001:
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Apparently the perp here was in the process of doing major bodily harm to his main squeeze.  It is unclear who called 911, but it was likely the woman being brutalized.  She won't get a BLM award.
