Muslim Religious Leader – Hit Your Wife, Just Don’t make her Ugly!

Hassan al-Laham is a Muslim religious leader in the Palestinian territory; in fact, he holds the official title of “mufti (or legal expert) of Gaza”! So, when al-Laham speaks, people listen.
Al-Laham appeared on a Palestinian TV show to explain how a husband should resolve a marital dispute in an effort to prevent a divorce…
Step 1: the Husband should warn his wife, while offering a “good word, good treatment and a positive look.” The husband would also do well to remember that he “did not buy her as a slave.”
Step 2: the couple should separate, sleeping in separate beds.
If step 1 and 2 don’t fix things… move on to harsher measures.
Step 3: the husband should hit the wife, but not in a way that would “make her ugly.” He went on to explain…
“In other words, not hitting that will bring the police, and break her hand and cause bleeding, or hitting that makes the face ugly. The hitting is not meant to disfigure, harm or degrade. The hitting will be like a joke. He will hit her jokingly. Not a blow that breaks a bone or makes the face ugly. The hitting is a kind of reminder that the love and friendship that Allah commanded is still found between us [the couple].”
Did you get all that? Did you take notes so that you can properly mediate your next spousal dispute?
This is Islam, folks. This is not some random misogynist off the street in Afghanistan. This is the chief Islamic legal expert from the Palestinian people. This is the type of thought, belief and practice that is common throughout the Islamic world. This is what the average Muslim religious leader is teaching the average Muslim practitioner on a daily basis. These are the kind of ideas that are currently flooding the borders of our allies in Europe and will soon be knocking on our doors as well. Are you ready for that? Are you ready to see your daughters married off to men who believe that it is acceptable to beat their wives, as long as they don’t DISFIGURE them?
I, for one, am not.
