The Party of Bush Yields, Warily, to a New Face: Donald Trump
« on: February 21, 2016, 04:22:45 pm »

Jeb Bush gave his concession speech after finishing fourth in South Carolina primary.

For the past year, party leaders who had pleaded with Mr. Bush to run and armed his campaign with a record-shattering war chest of $100 million had consoled themselves with assurances that Mr. Trump’s popularity in the polls would never translate into victory at the ballot box.

In his emotional seven-minute farewell to a Republican Party that elevated his father and brother to the White House, there were two words that a choked-up Jeb Bush could not bring himself to utter: “Donald Trump.”

Mr. Bush, the former governor of Florida, had been soundly rejected by an electorate he no longer recognized, hobbling his campaign and leaving him little choice but to withdraw from the presidential race.

“The people of Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina have spoken,” Mr. Bush said, holding back tears. “And I really respect their decision.”

It was a stunning turn for the man who a year ago embodied all the qualities that his party’s elders imagined Republican voters wanted in a president: civility, experience, pedigree and tolerance.

They were wrong.

The party of Prescott Bush, George Bush and George W. Bush is, for the moment, the party of Donald J. Trump.

The GOP is doing no such thing.  Trump is not a Republican, not a conservatve,  and lost overwhelmingly the "shares my values" question last night.

Lots of Republicans will never vote for this man, even in a general election.

And will they be subject to the same calumny those who railed against John McCain and Mitt Romney endured? You know, throwing the election and the Republic to the Dims?

Well, considering Trump is a Liberal (and friend to the Clintons), it's hard to rail against people saying that they tossed the nation to the Democrats and Clinton.

Romney wasn't anywhere as close to this scenario.

The GOP is hopelessly divided into two ideological camps.  The camps are as follows:  One camp believes in building a wall and is against amnesty, does not believe in intervening into foreign affairs not directly connected to our preservation and protection, and does not support Obamatrade.  The other camp is actively or tacitly for amnesty, supports a neocon foreign policy, and fully supports Obamatrade.  There is some overlap for certain party members, but generally you can easily place the party members in one of those two ideological camps.

I do not believe these two camps can be reconciled due to the deep divisions, passions and economic interests on these issues.  One camp will be the new face of the GOP.  The other camp will eventually form a new party or join the democrats in some form.

I agree to the point that the GOP is deeply divided.  I'm not aware of any camp actively or tacitly supporting "amnesty".  I am aware that the conservatives are in favor of comprehensive immigration reform which includes significant increases in border security.  As for US foreign policy, Republicans are all over the place from an isolationist policy to active military participation in the fight against ISIS.  I doubt any interested voters have read the entire TPP.  It's a concern to many, especially the fast-track provision.  I don't see any linkage with those issues to any particular wing of the GOP.  The issues dividing the Republicans are too complex and numerous to simply separate them into two ideological camps.

Is this not what happened to the Whigs, in the late 1850's ?

Seems like it's 1856 all over again !

How many Whigs were around after 1861 ?

The Whig party disbanded over slavery issues.

The Republican party will disband over illegal alien immigration issues.

No it will not.

Immigration is 7th on the list of concerns of Republican voters.

And Donald Trump never said a single word about immigration before June 16, 2015.  He dangled this as boob bait to you guys.

Agreed.  Every time immigration comes up, the usual people start calling for a third party.  They tried it n '92.  Great experiment.   :thud: With McCain the nominee in '08, people said we need to let Obama win to teach the Republican Party a lesson.   Great lesson... :thud:

But hey, ignore what people say is the definition of insanity. Don't need to start a third party.  There are plenty of them out there.  Quit griping and go hiking!

But keep in mind as divided as the Party is today, the GOP is still the only conservative voice in town.

A large segment of those 'conservatives' opposing Donald Trump's main platform of ending illegal immigration are opposing him because they (or someone in their families) are profiting from the Mexican illegal alien labor industry; either directly or indirectly.

The same applies to TPP, which will continue to profit 'conservatives' at the expense of American jobs and industry even more than CAFTA and NAFTA have.

There is a reason Trump has employed his own personal security.
