Karl Rove: Kasich, Cruz, Bush and Rubio Must Target Trump, Not Each Other
Thursday, February 11, 2016 04:49 PM

By: Todd Beamon

The four candidates for the Republican presidential nomination vying to unseat Donald Trump must sharply step up their attacks on the front-runner instead of themselves or else "the chances of nominating a mainstream Republican may dissipate," GOP consultant Karl Rove said.

And the ideal opportunity for John Kasich, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio is next week's South Carolina primary.

"Messrs. Kasich, Cruz, Bush and Rubio must resist the temptation to go after one another — which only wastes vital time — and instead concentrate fire on Mr. Trump," Rove wrote Wednesday in an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal. "South Carolina is a great venue to pop him on defense spending and healthcare.

"They must also bring up the front-runner’s greatest weakness: Americans have never elected a serial bankrupt. Populist South Carolinians may not understand why, when Mr. Trump's companies went under, such a wealthy man didn’t dip into his fortune to do right by the people who were hurt."

Trump is also vulnerable on his "claim to be a great businessman," Rove said.

"His casinos never reported a profit. The only person who may have made big money on them was The Donald, when he sold.

"So far Mr. Trump's response to the bankruptcy charge has been that he 'took advantage of the laws,'" Rove continued.

"Thoroughly airing the issue will provide an opportunity for him to give a better answer — or for Republicans to decide they don’t want a nominee with such baggage."

Trump's supporters don't care.

"I could shoot somebody on 5th Avenue and my supporters would still be with me."

That is literally true.

As a classic narcissist, Trump puts Obama to shame.   And now?

"I can change as this campaign goes on."  Just as he changed from pro-partial-birth abortion to pro-life, from anti-gun to pro-gun, from pro-immigration to anti-immigration.

Issues don't matter in this election.  Only bluster and anger matter.

Karl Rove: GOP Will Lose White House And Senate If Trump Becomes President

Republican strategist Karl Rove said Friday that the Republican Party will lose the White House and many seats in Congress if Donald Trump wins the presidential nomination.

“If Mr. Trump is its standard-bearer, the GOP will lose the White House and the Senate, and its majority in the House will fall dramatically,” Rove wrote in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.

Rove also said that Republicans will lose the White House if Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) becomes the nominee.

“If the nominee is Ted Cruz the situation is still dicey,” he wrote. Rove said that all of the Republican presidential candidates, other than Trump and Cruz, have a chance at beating Clinton and keeping the Senate.

Rove also argued that, “if the GOP contest narrows to two or three candidates by March 15, Mr. Trump will not be the party’s nominee.”

However, he claims that, “if on the Ides of March someone wins both the winner-take-all primaries in Florida (by Congressional district) and Ohio (statewide), that person will be the nominee.”

Trump continues to lead in the polls nationwide with 35 percent. Cruz trails behind him with 20 percent.

Every time Karl Rove opens his mouth, the Republicans lose 100,000 votes.

I swear he is a democrat operative.

I have a lot more respect for Rove than most here, but he has a pretty spotty record of analyzing Trump's strengths and weaknesses.  As I recall Rove was one of the first and last pundits to say Trump wasn't really running...it was self promotion.

So we have more people turning up to vote in the GOP Primaries then ever before, Cruz and Trump  are the front runners, yet Rove says we lose with them? Only a life time DC insider would take this sort of absurdity as "serious analysis".

Which is meaningless noise. If you could forecast elections simply by reading polling, we would not have to bother with election campaigns.

BTW, Bush was down 12 points to Kerry at this point in 2004. Did Rove race around TV telling everyone that Bush had to get out to save the GOP Congress?

Well then, if polls are bullshit, how do you make the argument that Trump has such a commanding lead in primaries that are yet to happen?

At this point in the process, hypothetical polling match-ups against the democrats is meaningless. No campaigning has occurred, yet.

No opportunity for comparing and contrasting have delineated the distinctions between the candidates, or the party philosophies.

No debates have occurred yet between the socialist democrats and regular Americans...who, I might add, don't identify as socialists.

The general election is an easy win for Trump. Getting that pesky nomination is his biggest hurdle.

I don't make that argument. That is you and Rove's arguement.

Nice try, you lose. Better luck next time

No, that was YOUR argument.

I posted poll numbers and you called them "meaningless noise".

Fair enough, but if polls are "meaningless noise" then Trump isn't as far ahead of the field as everyone thinks that he is, after all, those are poll numbers too.

In less than 20 days the picture will become very much more clear based on actual VOTES which have been cast and there will be much gnashing of teeth in some quarters at that point.

Yeah, I get that.

But meanwhile, during the entire period of time leading up to Iowa, all Trunp supporters wanted to talk about was how his being so far ahead in the polls was indicative of how much America wants Trump.

Now they want to call polling data "meaningless noise" because it doesn't paint a pretty picture for Trump in the general election.

You can't have it both ways.

I am NOT a Trump supporter and have consistently maintained that most of these polls are completely worthless as they are much more about DRIVING opinions than measuring them.
