Correspondent of Norwegian newspaper banned in Turkey
Correspondent of the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten, Silje Rønning Kampesæter, has been thrown out of Turkey, writes Dagbladet.
Aftenposten's correspondent has had her applications for a press card and residence permit in Turkey denied.
- Aftenposten looks very seriously upon that the newspaper in practice has been declared unwanted, says chief editor Espen Egil Hansen.
- We have correspondents in countries like Russia and China, working there without problems, while we can not be in the NATO country Turkey. This is completely unacceptable, and it is incredible that we are close military allies with a country that in this area shows contempt for elementary freedom of press, he said.
Silje Rønning Kampesæter began as a correspondent for Aftenposten in Istanbul last September. A month and a half later her application for a permanent press card was rejected. And also her residence permit, writes Aftenposten.
According to Aftenposten, the Turks made it clear that their objections are directed at her fiance. He is a German citizen, but have parents with Kurdish background.
