Michael Bloomberg will have watched the results coming in from the crucial New Hampshire primary on Tuesday night with interest.

The strong wins for both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders may have convinced him that the American public is yearning for an independent candidate amid growing dissatisfaction with the Republican and Democratic establishment.

According to an exit poll of Republican voters before the results were announced, nearly half the Republicans who cast votes said they were “looking for somebody outside the establishment”.

As many as 90 per cent were dissatisfied with the government, and 40 per cent said they were "angry" with the government.

Mr Sanders explained in his victory speech that his win showed voters were seeking "real change" - however, it remains to be seen whether he can garner nationwide support.

The fact that neither party can yet coalesce around a single candidate is also a strong indication for the former New York mayor that he could emerge from a divided field on both sides.

Mr Bloomberg told the Financial Times on Monday that he was "looking at all the options" when asked whether he would enter the race and it is thought he has given himself until early March to confirm his intentions.

"I find the level of discourse and discussion distressingly banal and an outrage and an insult to the voters," the 73-year-old said, adding that the US public deserved "a lot better".

Mr Bloomberg would be willing to spend at least $1 billion of his own money on a campaign for the November 2016 election, a source close to him reportedly said.

The 73-year-old billionaire, who earned a reputation as a social liberal with strong Wall Street ties during his time as New York mayor, has considered a White House run for years.

There also were suggestions on Twitter that Joe Biden, the vice president who has ruled himself out of the race, may have had his head turned by the result:

Bloomberg is one of the most liberal 'moderates' I know of. He's suck Dem votes like crazy. Go Mike!

The Republic is lost.
