When Berry liked to jam, he kept it a lot tighter: he didn't really hang with more freewheeling improvisors. You notice
in "Concerto in B Goode" the rhythm section didn't veer off the elemental groove or the basic structure Berry set out.

That may be because people say Berry really didn't have his own band, that he'd use other musicians to be his back up. I don't know how to describe it properly but I've seen a number of people infer it.

Quote
In the fifties, artists normally toured as a group with several other acts, each only doing a couple of songs. The tour usually had their own backup band. Later as noted, Chuck just travelled by himself and the promoter would hire a local band to act as a warm up act and then back Chuck (although he usually doesn't allow the guitar players to stay on stage with him, just drums, bass, or keyboards).

Johnny Cash called Bob Dylan, America's best songwriter.  Though it was a bit excessive but close.

@EC

Pickup band seems to be the term that above web page uses. That's probably the correct terminology.

Go to for example, Seattle, a pickup band would back one up.

I once bought an album by a famous guitar player.

Whenever I see the name of one member of this forum, I often think of that album. I'll bet no one can guess what forum member that is.

I don't think I ever listened to that release that much of all things, but I did his Ocean Boulevard album.

@corbe

Here is the original version that Clapton did a cover of.

And here it is with a little more backbeat.

I went to see Clapton right after the 461 Ocean Blvd album came out. It was the first time I had heard "Hand Jive" in years. I was so impressed,I stopped the car a couple of times on the way home and made my (now) ex,my cousin,and his date get out,and we rehearsed the song and dance along side the road.

Soooooo,there we are,at 3 AM,all 4 of us,in my parents bedroom singing hand jive to them,complete with choreography. My father,who just happened to be named Willie was not all that amused,and started grumbling. My mother told him if he would just shut up and ignore us we would get bored and go away.

There is a possibility we all may have been slightly high at the time.

He was that way on the road as the 1960s wore on, unless he was going to do something special like
the Fillmore Auditorium shows he did on the bill with the original Steve Miller Band, when they opened
for him and then stayed to back him up---including Steve Miller. Otherwise, he kept that practise for
touring for the rest of his life. But in the studio he'd have his pick of musicians.

As Glenn Campbell's condition gets worse, I remember watching this some time ago. Some of us may have heard his big hits a hundred times, so this gives it a bit of a spin. Wichita Lineman with the Stone Temple Pilots.

@corbe

Just proves how different people will have different reactions to the same things. I listen to da blues all day and get the "no matter how bad crap gets,I'm going to rise about it and survive!" frame of mind.

With a slight bittersweet tinge.

Hands up to everyone other than me who knew Glen Campbell was part of this charming Beach Boys
knockoff (come to think of it, his partners in crime for this project were Beach Boys collaborators
Gary Usher and Bruce Johnston) in 1967 . . .

I'm a huge Etta James fan,and this clip with her and Dr. John is one of my favorites on you tube. It really highlights the ability of two old pros who most definitely know what they are doing,"selling" a song to an audience.

And given the looks in both their eyes at times,I suspect there may have been a bit of history in the background.
