BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A Louisiana law ordering abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital has been struck down by District Judge John deGravelles of Baton Rouge.

The law requires doctors who perform abortions to be able to admit patients to a hospital within 30 miles. Supporters say it's meant to protect women's health. Opponents say the measure essentially would make it impossible for women to get abortions.

A federal judge's ruling was released just after 5 p.m. It says the Jindal-era law is not constitutional and granted an injunction for abortion clinics in the state.

The law would shutter all but one of the five clinics in the state. The one clinic that would remain open would be in

"Today’s victory guarantees Louisiana women will continue to have access to critical health care services in the face of relentless political attacks on their health and rights," said Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights.

"Clinic shutdown laws like those in Louisiana and Texas threaten to leave women with a patchwork of rights across the US that is troublingly reminiscent of the days before Roe v Wade.  Politicians cannot be allowed to sneak around the constitution and rob women of their ability to obtain safe and legal abortion.
