That's when we experience evolutionary changes to our biology, increased brain size, muscle hypertrophy, evolving enzymes, bone mass.

So true.  Who wants a stranger talking your head off about stuff you don't care about when you really just want to be left alone?  I always carry a book with me just for that purpose.

On the other hand, if I'm having a drink or two in the bar, I suddenly feel all talky and friendly.

Gen pop and first-class travel has always been mostly isolated.  I was specifically talking about airport bars and restaurants while on layovers or waiting to board, and not the actual travel time.  I also don't consider commuting via the rail or subway to work as being at all the same as airport traveling.

I'm glad you brought this up.

Spending an abundance of time on your cell phones makes perfect sense. On these smart phones we stay connected to our acquaintances, our business associates, our family. The people around us at airports and on busy streets are strangers--and there are so many of them rushing past us. Why would we want to engage all these strangers?

I do admit, in the situations Carling was talking about, I don't bury myself in a book or paper or my phone. Don't like talking much to strangers either, but I love to people watch.
