Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s press conference to launch an anti-robbery campaign got off to a bad start when equipment was stolen from inside a news crew’s vehicle.

A “smash and grab” heist of a WJLA-TV news crew’s car happened before Bowser and Police Chief Cathy Lanier finished speaking about the city’s new task force, the station reported Wednesday.

The task force, which includes members of the the police department, Metro Transit Police Department, the Office of the Attorney General and the United States Attorney’s Office, aims to combat a recent crime wave.

The ABC affiliate said the theft of its equipment happened just 100 feet away from the mayor.

“One robbery is too many,” the mayor tweeted after the incident. “This task force will identify crime patterns, respond in real-time to what appears to be a robbery spree in progress, and identify & arrest criminals who victimize our neighborhoods to get them off our streets.”

The station did not note any arrests in its report.

The Metropolitan Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment by the Huffington Post.
