The Columbia Police Department has charged Kyle Carpenter, the Medal of Honor recipient from South Carolina who was honored for his actions in Afghanistan, with hit and run, the agency announced Thursday.

According to police, at around 8:30 p.m., Carpenter struck a man who was crossing Assembly Street at the crosswalk at Blossom Street. It's believed the pedestrian was on his way to the Strom Thurmond Fitness Center.

Investigators say Carpenter pulled over and turned on his hazard lights, but did not exit the vehicle to exchange required information or render aid. The pedestrian then stood up and walked over to the side of the road, and officers say Carpenter drove away.

What has the fact that he is MOH recipient got to do with the story?
Why bring it up unless there is a desire to demean the military and/or the MOH?
