Over $100,000 was stolen from what is known as one of the most secure military installations in the world, according to a report on 13News Now, an ABC affiliate station out of North Carolina.
An investigation conducted by NCIS and the Homeland Security Department found thieves had stolen gear and equipment from Yorktown Naval Weapons Station between 2012 and 2014.
An affidavit names former U.S. Navy Reservist Matthew Thomas Deleo and three accomplices as the individuals responsible for stealing $145,000 worth of military gear from a warehouse, then sold it under the profile “the kings of surplus” on eBay.
No evidence of a break-in was noted, due to Deleo using his Common Access Card to enter the facility.
The thieves were caught in a surveillance operation, and were seen with a truck and a 21-foot trailer, which they drove from the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station Cheatham Annex to a cabin at a local campground. Discovered at that scene by investigators was military clothing, rope, commercial garbage bags, ski masks, antennas, flash lights, a laptop and a crack pipe.
Arrest warrants were issued for the four men and they were charged with Conspiracy to Steal Government Property, which, according to the Cornell University Law Institute, “if two or more person conspire to commit any offense against the United States… each shall be fined… or imprisoned not more than five years or both.”
