Bruce Vigfusson, 45, formerly of Manitoba, died Monday in Mexico of a pulmonary edema, media reports said. He had been serving a 4½-year prison term.

A Manitoba man serving a prison term in Mexico has died in hospital in the northern city of Hermosillo, Sonora.

Bruce Vigfusson, 45, died Monday of a pulmonary edema, a blood clot in the lung, lapoliticaeslapolitica.com said, citing Donna Voth, a family friend.

Vigfusson was convicted in Mexico in September 2012 of assault that occurred during a home invasion. He was sentenced to 4½ years in prison. His family called his actions self-defence.

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs issued a statement Tuesday saying "our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who passed away in Mexico."

The statement said Canadian consular officials in Mexico were  in contact with local authorities and providing consular assistance to the family. It refused further details "to protect the privacy of the individual concerned."

Vigfusson had sent a note to his Mexican wife, Celia Valenzuela Amado, on Dec. 17, saying he was "feeling very bad," that he was "very sick, can't breathe" and "I think they are killing me," lapoliticaeslapolitica.com reported.

It said Vigfusson's son Colt, who lives in Manitoba's Interlake region, wanted his father's body returned to Winnipeg for an autopsy.
