Given the history of the German people, why on earth did Merkel think it would be a good idea to bring in a foreign population that doesn't respect any nation, let alone German nationalism, and allow that foreign population to be supported by German workers, and ultimately take jobs from Germans? Throw in that more than a few of them wil end up raping and killing Germans, as their Koran allows and encourages them to do.
What could possibly go wrong?!
Germany's post WWII economy recovered by the 1950s so strongly, that they had a labor shortage.
They started bringing in guestworkers, including quite a large contingent of Turks. The immigrant generation proved to be good workers, and eventually had families, and a second generation.
Each country in Europe has their own unique story about immigrants. In the UK it is free movement for nations comprising the Commonwealth, such as Pakistan, India, etc.
France had their Algerian colony. When the Balkans exploded in the early 1990s refugees found help across most of the nations.
Scandinavia it was mostly humanitarian, share their economic good forune, initially.
All across Europe, the EU brought easy border crossing.
It is not like the influx this year, is a stand alone phenomenon. Lots and lots of muslims.
