Donald Trump thinks he can call Bill Gates to "close up" the internet

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump just said the US should consider "closing up" the internet to curb radical extremism. Trump, a man that routinely claims everyone in charge of the US is stupid, believes that as president he could just call up Bill Gates to help him shut off the internet. Trump floated the idea at a campaign rally at USS Yorktown in South Carolina tonight as a way to stop ISIS "jihadists" from recruiting Americans to commit acts of domestic terrorism. The idea is so dumb it almost has us, too, at a loss for words.


"We're losing a lot of people because of the internet," Trump said. "We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, 'Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.' These are foolish people."


It's unclear if Trump was suggesting the US government censor certain parts of the web or if he lacks a basic understanding of how the internet works.

Donald is stupid and no I don't want the Internet to shutdown cause of ISIS..  I guess I'm foolish cause I believe in freedom. The video on the site.

What other countries heavily controls or bans Internet access?    Oh yea, China and North Korea.   Smooth Move, Trump.    Are Trumpsters going to defend this one?   That's a dumb question, they are looking at TOS right now, copying the best replies.

AGAIN....I watched his rally live, uncensored - - - and Trump did not say what you're glomming onto as a "gotcha" moment.

Educate yourself.  Listen to the man directly and stop relying on the media filter to form your political opinion and argument.

Tell me more how the First Amendment applies to immigration policy, please.  Are you hiding from that moronic line of thinking in the other thread as you accuse those who won't play Pile on Trump of having no original thoughts?

I mean, that was one of the dumbest things I've ever read on a "serious" political message board, and you won't go back and explain yourself and instead hide like a coward and ignore legitimate challenges to your criticism.

I should stay out of this but cold gin says otherwise.  Navy did respond on the other thread that Trump wants to ban US citizens abroad who are muslim from re-entering.  That makes it a 1st amendment issue.

It is poor netiquette to follow someone from thread to thread to challenge them no matter how justified you feel in saving us from the degeneration that could result from NavyCanDo's anti-Trump opinions.

And I think people that know me here, also know that though I may go after Trump - I do a damn good job not making personal attacks on other BRiefers, no matter who they support.   But one or two here who tend to be obnoxious make it so hard, even for me.

I'm not quite sure that I am following this.  Are you saying that Trump wants to ban U.S. citizens who are of Muslim descent from re-entering??  That is not my understanding.  My understanding is that he wants to ban Muslims from entering this country - not U.S. citizens.  That's the problem with thinking with the hyphenated-American mentality.  Latino-American, African-American, Irish-American, German-American, etc., etc.  Either you are an American citizen or you aren't.  IF Trump wants to prevent U.S. citizens who are of Muslim descent from re-entering the country; that is problematic.
