KISS’ Simmons Defends Tebow: He ‘Believes in God and People Pick on Him,’ If Muslim, ‘People Would Never Dare’

Although many liberal news outlets poke fun at quarterback Tim Tebow’s openly Christian faith, entrepreneur and rocker Gene Simmons of KISS defended Tebow’s strong beliefs, saying the attacks are “the most heinous thing in sports journalism,” and added that “people would never dare” to ridicule Tebow if “he was a Jew or a Muslim.”

“All those pundits and the people in the peanut gallery who pick on him because he’s an avowed Christian, and proud of it, this is the most heinous thing in sports journalism and reporting,” said Gene Simmons on Fox & Friends, “because here’s the guy who believes in his God and people pick on him.”

“If he was a Jew or a Muslim and you did that – people would never dare,” said Simmons, who is Jewish (nee Chaim Witz).  “But for some reason, if you’re a Christian, you’re allowed to pick on him.”

“I think it’s the height of lunacy, and those journalists should be held accountable,” said the KISS bass guitarist and co-lead singer.  “They’re never going to pick on a guy who tortures dogs, or perhaps gone to jail for murder."

“But if he believes in Christ His Lord, then he’s open season,” said Simmons.  “It’s like, what country are we living in?”

Simmons, 66, helped found the notorious and hugely popular rock band KISS in the 1970s. In addition to music, Simmons is an actor, reality TV star, and philanthropist known particularly for helping children in Africa through ChildFund International and Mending Kids International.

Tim Tebow, 28, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2007 and played for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and New England Patriots, currently is a free agent.

Born Chaim Witz on August 25, 1949 in Haifa, Israel, Gene Simmons first decided he wanted to be in a band while in middle school, after watching girls scream at The Beatles on TV.  ... His mother, Flora, was a Hungarian Jew and Holocaust survivor, who watched her family die in the concentration camps when she was only 14 years old. After the end of World War II, Flora headed to Israel. It was there that she met carpenter Yeichel Witz, the man who would eventually become Chaim's father. ...Biography.com
